Whirlpool Refrigerator Broken Wires Class Action Litigation

Costa, et al. v. Whirlpool Corp., Case No: 1:24-cv-00188-MN (D. Del.)

Chimicles Schwartz Kriner & Donaldson-Smith (“CSK&D”) filed a class action complaint in the United States District Court for the District of Delaware on February 2, 2024, asserting claims on behalf of refrigerator owners whose ice makers, water dispensers, and control panels inside the freezer door failed as a result of broken wires. Specifically, Plaintiffs alleged that as a result of defective wires used in the freezer doors of certain side-by-side style Whirlpool, MayTag, KitchenAid, and Jenn-Air branded refrigerators, their ice makers, water dispensers, and other functions inside the freezer door of their refrigerators frequently failed due to broken wires at or near the freezer door hinge, often within just a few years of purchase. Plaintiffs also alleged that repairing these broken wires often requires replacement of the entire freezer door, which can cost as much as purchasing a new refrigerator.

On February 27, 2026, the parties entered into a Settlement Agreement proposing the settlement of the action. On March 3, 2026, the Court granted preliminary approval of the proposed Settlement. Under the settlement, eligible class members may be entitled to claim significant cash compensation (e.g., up to 50% of the original purchase price) or a free repair.
