UPS, DHL, FedEx Import Fee Overcharge – Class Action Investigation
Chimicles Schwartz Kriner & Donaldson-Smith is investigating potential class action claims on behalf of consumers who may have been charged inflated import fees by major shipping carriers, including UPS, DHL, and FedEx. With the recent elimination of the $800 de minimis threshold that officially began May 1, 2025, all packages shipped from China and Hong Kong to the United States are now going to be subject to customs duties, regardless of value. This change may have led to unexpected and excessive import fees being charged to consumers who have purchased goods from online retailers such as eBay, TikTok Shop, Temu, Etsy, Shein, AliExpress, Amazon Haul, and other stores that sell items that ship directly from China or Hong Kong
Reports indicate that consumers expecting packages shipped from China via UPS, DHL, or FedEx are receiving email notifications from these carriers demanding payment of import fees, often starting at $30 or more and frequently exceeding the value of the purchased items. Some reports suggest these fees appear to include not only the actual tariff and customs duty, but also substantial and brokerage or handling fees imposed by the shipping carriers.
