Toyota Steering Wheel Synthetic Leather Deterioration – Class Action Investigation
Chimicles Schwartz Kriner & Donaldson-Smith is investigating a potential class action case related to reports that steering wheels in certain Toyota vehicles may prematurely peel, bubble, or degrade, often occurring during the warranty period.
Specifically, many Toyota owners report that the SofTex synthetic leather material used on their steering wheels begins to deteriorate under normal driving conditions. When affected consumers attempt to have the issue addressed under Toyota’s new vehicle limited warranty, many are allegedly denied coverage. Toyota has reportedly attributed the damage to external factors such as natural hand oils or environmental exposure, rather than treating the problem as a defect in materials or workmanship.
Recent Toyota models known to use SofTex-covered steering wheels that may be susceptible to this type of premature material failure include:
- 2021-2025 Toyota Prius (2021–2025) – (Nightshade, XLE, Limited, and AWD-e trims)
- 2021-2025 Toyota RAV4, RAV4 Hybrid, and RAV4 Prime – (XSE, TRD Off-Road, and Prime SE/XSE trims)
- 2022-2025 Toyota 4Runner (2022–2025) (TRD Pro, TRD Sport, and Limited trims)
- 2021-2025 Toyota Corolla (XLE and XSE trims)
