National Public Data (NPD) Data Breach  – Class Action Investigation

Chimicles Schwartz Kriner & Donaldson-Smith is investigating a potential class action relating to a data breach affecting National Public Data, a public records data provider who specializes in background checks and fraud prevention.

What Happened at National Public Data?

According to recent news reports, hacking group USDoD had allegedly gained unauthorized access to National Public Data’s system and had stolen a large cache of nearly 2.9 billion records on a large swath of US, Canadian, and British citizens, both living and deceased individuals. Information compromised as a part of this breach could include, but is not limited to: full names, addresses, address history, and social security numbers.

UsDoD claimed responsibility for the hacking in an online forum and said that the data was available for purchase for $3.5 million.

Why is it Important to you?

The data breach, if confirmed, could have severe implications for the affected users, leading to potential identity theft, financial fraud, and further cyber attacks.
