Ford Hybrid Engine Compartment Fire Recall  – Class Action Investigation

Chimicles Schwartz Kriner Donaldson-Smith is investigating a potential class action related to a recall issued for certain 2020-2023 Ford hybrid vehicles equipped affected by an engine defect that can lead to vehicle fires. Hybrid vehicle models that are a part of the recall include 2020-2023 Ford Escape, 2022-2023 Maverick, and 2021-2023 Lincoln Corsair.

Specifically, it is alleged that a defect in these vehicles containing hybrid electric engines can send oil and fuel vapors into the engine compartment. The build-up of oil and fuel vapors in the vicinity of an already hot engine can lead to an engine fire. Ford had previously issued a recall and tried fixing the issue by instructing dealerships to modify the under-engine shields and active grille shutters as a way of redirecting the buildup of fuel vapors in the engine compartment. However, a number of vehicles that had these repairs done still reported engine compartment fires.

As a result, a second recall was issued as an addendum to the previous one in July 2022, adding 2023 models to the list of affected vehicles. Ford is now instructing owners of affected vehicles to quickly park and shut-off their engines if they see smoke or notice a change in vehicle power. Currently, Ford has yet to develop a working repair for the problem, leaving owners with vehicles that are vulnerable to vehicle fires.
