Secure Healthcare Information Management Data Breach Investigation
SHIM is an Allentown, Pennsylvania-based billing and medical management company serving independent physicians and medical institutions in northeastern Pennsylvania.
What Happened at Secure Healthcare Information Management?
On July 17, 2026, SHIM experienced a network disruption and launched an investigation with assistance from cybersecurity experts. The investigation determined that an unauthorized party accessed or acquired certain personal information between July 6 and July 16, 2026.
SHIM confirmed the scope of the incident on September 18, 2026, and began mailing notification letters to potentially affected individuals on October 6, 2026.
According to SHIM, the potentially affected information may have included:
- Names
- Dates of birth
- Social Security numbers
- Driver’s license or state identification numbers
- Medical information
- Health insurance information
SHIM’s public announcement does not specify the number of individuals affected. The company is offering complimentary identity protection services to eligible individuals.
Why Is This Important?
The exposure of Social Security numbers, government identification numbers, and health information can place affected individuals at risk of identity theft, fraudulent credit applications, medical identity theft, and targeted phishing schemes. Sensitive medical information can also reveal private details about an individual’s health and treatment.
Because Social Security numbers cannot easily be replaced and medical information can remain sensitive indefinitely, affected individuals may face ongoing privacy risks and spend considerable time monitoring accounts and addressing potential misuse.
