What Is PPP Loan Fraud?
The PPP was established to provide financial assistance to eligible businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic. To obtain a PPP loan or loan forgiveness, applicants were required to certify the accuracy of information regarding their eligibility, payroll expenses, employees, business operations, and use of loan proceeds.
Potential PPP fraud may involve:
- Inflated or fabricated payroll records
- False statements regarding employee headcount or revenue
- Failure to disclose affiliated entities or employees
- Applications submitted on behalf of inactive, dormant, or nonexistent businesses
- Falsified tax returns, bank records, payroll records, or other supporting documentation
- Use of PPP funds for unauthorized purposes
- False certifications submitted to obtain loan forgiveness
- PPP loans obtained by businesses or organizations that were ineligible for the program
