University of Pittsburgh Medical Center – Oncology Billing Practices

Chimicles & Tikellis LLP is investigating a potential class action lawsuit related to the billing practices at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (“UPMC”) and its affiliates for oncology treatment. It has been alleged that UPMC has improperly switched the rates at which it bills for these services – from “physician-based” billing rates to the significantly higher “hospital outpatient” rates. It has been alleged by certain health insurance companies that this change has more than tripled the cost of these already-expensive oncology services. C&T is investigating whether this has also caused patients to pay more for these services, in the form of higher deductibles, co-pays, insurance premiums, or otherwise.
