Live Nation-Ticketmaster Data Breach – Class Action Investigation
Chimicles Schwartz Kriner & Donaldson-Smith is investigating a potential class action relating to a data breach incident involving Ticketmaster, one of the largest online ticket sales platforms in the world.
What Happened at Ticketmaster?
According to recent news reports, hacking group ShinyHunters had allegedly gained unauthorized access to Live Nation-Ticketmaster’s system and had stolen a large cache of customer data belonging to an estimated 560 million individuals. Information compromised as a part of this breach could include, but is not limited to: names, addresses, phone numbers, and partial credit card details (last 4 digits of credit cards). ShinyHunters claimed responsibility for the hacking in an online forum and said that the data was available for purchase for $500,000 in a ‘one-time sale.’
Who are ShinyHunters?
ShinyHunters is no stranger to the hacking and cybercrime world. The group is known for its high-profile data breaches and is also the owner and administrator of Breach Forums, a notorious platform for cybercrime activities.
Despite the FBI’s recent efforts to shut down the forum, ShinyHunters managed to reclaim the seized domain, showcasing their technical prowess and resilience against law enforcement actions. This not only resulted in the return of Breach Forums to the dark web but also saw its revival on the world wide web, using the original domain.
Ticketmaster’s Recent Troubles
On January 26, 2023, the company admitted that ticket sales for Taylor Swift’s concerts were disrupted by a bot-driven attack, highlighting vulnerabilities in their ticketing system. Most recently, on May 23, 2024, the U.S. Department of Justice and a group of State Attorneys General sued Live Nation-Ticketmaster for monopolizing markets across the live concert industry. These lawsuits, among others, highlight a pattern of cybersecurity and ethical challenges faced by Ticketmaster over the years.
Why is it Important to you?
The data breach, if confirmed, could have severe implications for the affected users, leading to potential identity theft, financial fraud, and further cyber attacks. The hacker group’s bold move to put this data on sale goes on to show the growing menace of cybercrime and the increasing sophistication of these cyber adversaries.
