Texas Tech University Data Breach – Class Action Investigation
Chimicles Schwartz Kriner & Donaldson-Smith is investigating a potential class action relating to a data breach incident involving Texas Tech University (“Texas Tech”), specifically its Health Sciences Center and El Paso counterpart. Texas Tech is a public academic health institution that is part of the wider Texas Tech University System. The organization disclosed to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services that an estimated 1.4 million individuals were affected by this data breach.
What Happened at Texas Tech?
In or around September 2024, Texas Tech identified issues with its system causing a temporary disruption to its computer systems and applications. Following the disruption, Texas Tech took additional steps to ensure the system’s security. Upon further investigation, Texas Tech learned that a cybersecurity event resulted in unauthorized access to its system between September 17, 2024- September 29, 2024, leading to the removal of certain files from there. These files are associated with the personally-identifying information of an estimated 1.4 million individuals.
Personally-identifying information compromised as result of this breach may include, but not limited to: name, date of birth, social security number, driver’s license number, government-issued identification number, financial account information, health insurance information and medical information, including medical records numbers, billing & claims data, as well as diagnosis and treatment information
