Samsung LCD Television Refresh Rate – Class Action Investigation

Chimicles & Tikellis is currently investigating a potential class action lawsuit on behalf of consumers who purchased Samsung LCD televisions with alleged misleading refresh rates.  As background, LCD televisions suffer from a common issue known as motion blur, where the image blurs or smears with any motion.  One way to combat this problem is with a higher refresh rate.  The refresh rate is how often a TV “refreshes” or changes the image on screen.

In order to achieve a faster refresh rate (with more image changes per second), a television must incorporate an advanced process in which hardware and software analyze consecutive image frames and then create and insert synthesized image frames on screen.  It is alleged that Samsung, rather than incorporating the necessary hardware and software to achieve a true faster refresh rate, uses a “scanning backlight” or “black frame insertion” to mimic the performance benefits of a faster refresh rate.  This may result in a television that is advertised as having “240Hz Clear Motion Rate (CMR)” or a “240Hz Auto Motion Plus” having an actual refresh rate of only 120Hz.  As a result, consumers have paid premiums for LCD televisions advertised as having faster refresh rates when, in fact, they did not.
