Richmond University Medical Center Data Breach – Class Action Investigation
Chimicles Schwartz Kriner & Donaldson-Smith is investigating a potential class action relating to a data breach incident involving Richmond University Medical Center (“RUMC”), a hospital located in Staten Island, New York. The Company reported to the US Department of Health & Human Services that an estimated 670,000 individuals had their information taken in a data breach incident
What Happened at RUMC?
On or around May 6, 2023, RUMC discovered that an unauthorized third-party had hacked into its computer system and removed a cache of files stored there. The hospital hired a third-party cybersecurity forensics team to further investigate the extent of the breach.
The investigation confirmed that the personally identifying information of an estimated 670,000 individuals was compromised including, but not limited to: names, birthdate, Social Security numbers, state ID or driver’s license numbers, biometric details, financial account data, payment card information, medical data, health insurance policy details, and user credentials.
