PowerSchool SIS Data Breach – Class Action Investigation
Chimicles Schwartz Kriner & Donaldson-Smith is investigating a potential class action relating to a data breach incident involving PowerSchool SIS Platform , a Company who operates a cloud-based software program used by schools and school districts worldwide.
What Happened at PowerSchool?
On or around December 28, 2024, PowerSchool discovered that an unauthorized third-party had gained access to one of the Company’s customer support portals called PowerSource. This portal allowed for easy access to a cache of sensitive customer information including that belonging to teachers and students using the platform.
The company has yet to confirm the exact number of individuals affected by the breach, as well as what type of personally identifying information (“PII”) may have been compromised. Tentatively, the Company has stated in a recent notification letter to users of the platform that compromised PII may have included, but not limited to: names, addresses, Social Security Numbers (SSNs), medical information, and school grades data.
Why is it Important to you?
The data breach, if confirmed, could have severe implications for the affected users, leading to potential identity theft, financial fraud, and further cyber attacks. The hacker group’s bold move to put this data on sale goes on to show the growing menace of cybercrime and the increasing sophistication of these cyber adversaries.
