Movie Theater Clearance Agreements – Antitrust Investigation

Chimicles & Tikellis is investigating a potential antitrust class action lawsuit against movie studios and the three major movie theater chains (Regal Cinemas, AMC Entertainment, and Cinemark) on behalf of smaller, independent theaters. It has been reported that these three theater chains and movie studios have entered into exclusive agreements, or “clearance agreements,” that prevent smaller rival theaters from showing certain movies (often blockbuster releases). It was recently announced that the Justice Department and 10 state attorneys general have commenced investigations into whether these agreements violate the antitrust laws.
