Chimicles & Tikellis LLP is investigating claims that HP uses firmware in its printers to recognize after-market or remanufactured ink and toner cartridges and prohibit these products from operating properly with HPs printers, effectively “locking out” non-HP ink and toner cartridges from use with HP printers. Reports indicate that some consumers receive an error message indicating that their after-market cartridges are defective when attempting to install or using an already-installed non-HP ink and toner cartridges. The result of this is that consumers are left with completely useless cartridges and are forced to pay for HP cartridges, which are often times twice as much in cost. HPs alleged conduct may be violative of federal and state antitrust and consumer laws.
