Elmcrest Children’s Center Data Breach Class Action Investigation
Chimicles Schwartz Kriner & Donaldson-Smith is investigating a potential class action relating to a data breach incident involving Elmcrest Children’s Center, a children’s mental health and residential treatment facility located in Syracuse, New York.
What Happened at Elmcrest Children’s Center?
Between March 10, 2025 and July 24, 2025, an unauthorized actor gained access to Elmcrest Children’s Center’s computer network and copied sensitive files containing personally identifiable information and protected health information of children and families. The ransomware group INTERLOCK has claimed responsibility for the attack, alleging they stole 448 GB of data from the facility.
What Information Was Compromised?
According to breach notifications and security reports, the compromised data includes, but is not limited to, the following:
- Names
- Dates of birth
- Medical information
- Health insurance details
- Protected health information (PHI)
- Other sensitive personally identifiable information
Why Is This Important?
The exposure of children’s sensitive health and personal information places affected families at a significantly increased risk of identity theft, medical fraud, and other related harms. Children’s identities are particularly valuable to criminals as the theft can go undetected for years until the child applies for credit or government services. The compromised data can be exploited by criminals for decades to come.
