City of Canton, Ohio Data Breach  – Class Action Investigation

Chimicles Schwartz Kriner & Donaldson-Smith is investigating a potential class action relating to a data breach incident involving City of Canton, OH (“Canton”), a city located in Ohio.  Canton confirmed that 269,176 individuals had their information taken in a data breach incident according to a filing with the Maine Attorney General. 

What Happened at Canton? 

On or around July 25, 2024, Canton discovered that an unauthorized user had gained access to Canton’s system. Canton retained a cybersecurity firm to conduct further investigation to confirm the scope of the breach. This cybersecurity firm concluded their investigation on August 29, 2024, and confirmed that personal information of approximately 269,276 individuals had been compromised. 

The information compromised may have included, but not limited to the following: name, driver’s license or state issued ID number, and mailing address.

The data breach, if confirmed, could have severe implications for the affected users, leading to potential identity theft, financial fraud, and further cyber attacks. The hacker group’s bold move to put this data on sale goes on to show the growing menace of cybercrime and the increasing sophistication of these cyber adversaries.
