Asheville Eye Associates Data Breach – Class Action Investigation
Chimicles Schwartz Kriner & Donaldson-Smith is investigating a potential class action relating to a data breach incident involving Asheville Eye Associates, an eye care provider based out of Asheville, North Carolina. The Company confirmed an estimated 193,306 individuals had their information taken in a data breach incident according to a filing with the US Department of Health and Human Services (“HHS”).
What Happened at Asheville Eye Associates?
On or around January 17, 2025, Asheville Eye Associates disclosed that it had been affected by a recent cyberattack as result of an unauthorized user gaining access to its system. Since that announcement, a ransomware group known as DragonForce has taken credit for the breach, confirming that the cyberattack took place in or around November 2024.
According to a notice disseminated to all those affected, the breach may have compromised sensitive personally- identifying information and medical data of approximately 193,306 individals including, but not limited to: names, email addresses, birth dates, social security numbers, patient account numbers, diagnosis information, employee and physician’s address/phone numbers, spouses’ names, driver’s license, passports, Social Security numbers, professional credentials, HR documents, health insurance information, diagnostic images, administrative documents, and payment details for medical services.
