American Water Works Data Breach – Class Action Investigation
Chimicles Schwartz Kriner & Donaldson-Smith is investigating a potential class action relating to a potential data breach incident involving American Water Works Company, Inc. (“American Water Works”), a New Jersey based water utility company that supplies drinking water and wastewater services to nearly 14 million individuals in 14 different states.
What Happened at American Water Works?
On October 3, 2024, American Water Works detected unauthorized activity on their system and responded by shutting down certain systems resulting in an outage of several of its computer systems including the billing system.. The company has also hired a third-party cybersecurity group to work on accessing the scope of the cyberattack.
On October 7, 2024 American Water Works confirmed the range of personal information belonging to an estimated 14 million customers compromised as result of the data breach. The personal information compromised includes, but not limited to the following: name, mailing address, phone number, social security number, date of birth, driver’s license and state-issued photo ID information, and financial information.
