Allegheny Health Network Data Breach – Class Action Investigation
Chimicles Schwartz Kriner & Donaldson-Smith is investigating a potential class action relating to a data breach incident involving Allegheny Health Network (“AHN”), a 14-hospital academic medical system based out of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
What Happened at AHN?
On or around October 11, 2024, AHN discovered that an unauthorized user had gained access to data stored by one of its business associates, IntraSystems, LLC, a third-party company that AHN subcontracts to host and manage the hospital’s computer system.
IntraSystems conducted its own internal investigation to determine the scope of the potential data breach. On November 19, 2024, they informed AHN that the cyberattack had resulted in the compromise of sensitive personally identifying information (“PII”) belonging to an estimated 293,000 home care patients who received AHN’s Home Medical Equipment and Home Infusion therapy services.
The investigation confirmed that the PII exposed includes, but not limited to the following: name, date of birth, addresses, social security number, financial account numbers, health insurance information, and treatment information.
Why is it Important to you?
The data breach, if confirmed, could have severe implications for the affected users, leading to potential identity theft, financial fraud, and further cyber attacks. The hacker group’s bold move to put this data on sale goes on to show the growing menace of cybercrime and the increasing sophistication of these cyber adversaries.
